In Sanskrit, the word for “fish,” which represents Matsya, an incarnation of Lord Vishnu, gives the festival its name. Hindu legend says that Lord Vishnu, in the form of Matsya, saved Manu from a great flood. This area from long ago was a part of the Matsya Mahajanapada, a kingdom made up of Indo-Aryan clans during the Vedic time. Its capital was Viratnagari, which is now Bairat.
