Shreyas Iyer Reveals Champions Trophy Struggles: Anger, Frustration & Tears – an emotional admission from the captain of PBKS, who finished as India’s highest scorer at the 2025 Champions Trophy. Despite his outstanding on-field performance, Iyer has talked candidly about the tremendous mental strain he endured during the competition. He disclosed that he was so overcome with frustration and expectations that he started crying following Team India’s first practice session before to the campaign. He opens out about the emotional struggles that athletes face off the scoreboard.
After team India’s first practice before the competition, which was held jointly in Pakistan and Dubai, Punjab Kings captain Shreyas Iyer, who finished the 2025 Champions Trophy campaign as India’s best scorer, admitted that he had cried. “I last shed a tear during the 2025 Champions Trophy’s opening practice. As a result of my inability to bat correctly while I was in the nets, I was actually crying. When actress Sahiba Bali asked Iyer, “When was the last time he cried?” during the “Kandid with Kings” episode, Iyer responded, “I got so angry at myself that I started to cry and I was also shocked because I don’t cry easily.”
“I had performed well in the series against England, so I thought I would carry the same flow with me, but the wickets were different and to adapt on the first day itself was an arduous task, so when the practice ended, I wanted to practice a little extra and I did not get the chance to do it, so I got angry,” he explained.
In five games, Iyer amassed 243 runs, including consecutive half-centuries against Pakistan and New Zealand in the group stage, to end as India’s leading run scorer in the championship. He scored a crucial 48-run knock in the championship game.
Alongside his countrymen Virat Kohli, KL Rahul, Mohammed Shami, and Varun Chakaravarthy, he was also selected for the Champions Trophy’s Team of the Tournament.
The Punjab Kings had a strong start to the 2025 season, defeating the Gujarat Titans and the Lucknow Super Giants before suffering their first defeat at the hands of the Rajasthan Royals.
Iyer also discussed the necessity of maintaining humility during the campaign and the significance of getting off to a strong start.
“It’s a positive vibe. A strong opening performance is crucial for a successful IPL season, and fortunately, we got off to a strong start. A positive start, in my opinion, always creates a positive atmosphere in the camp, which will carry over into subsequent games. Nevertheless, maintaining one’s humility is as crucial,” he stated.
