Given that Mohammed Siraj recovered after being cut from India’s Champions Trophy-winning team earlier this year, his ascent has been noteworthy.
The pace spearhead Mohammed Siraj’s work rate and Shubman Gill‘s leadership in the current 18th Indian Premier League have pleased Gujarat Titans director of cricket Vikram Solanki. In 2022, the Gujarat Titans, led by Hardik Pandya, won the IPL title in their inaugural season. Following that, they advanced to the 2023 final before going through a period of change when Gill assumed control after Pandya re joined the Mumbai Indians, his former team.
In the previous edition, GT finished seventh with just five victories in 14 games during Gill’s first term as captain. However, seven games into the season, GT has already collected as many victories this time. Although he feels he has matured into the position, Solanki thinks Gill still has a lot to learn as a captain.
“We really witnessed the relationships he has developed with his bowling group last year. From one game to the next, he has become more comfortable in the job. Solanki stated during the pre-match press conference prior to their encounter against the Kolkata Knight Riders, “It’s very good to see him sort of developing as a captain – developing his captaincy style.”
He can also rely on a bowling assault with a lot of expertise, which is clearly very beneficial. With regard to his captaincy, however, he keeps getting better,” he continued.
Siraj was his main weapon as Solanki emphasised Gill’s access to a star-studded bowling unit. With 11 wickets from seven games, the seasoned Indian speedster is tied for the team’s most wickets taken this season.
Given that Siraj recovered after being cut from India’s Champions Trophy-winning team earlier this year, his ascent has been noteworthy. As ‘Miyaan Magic’ continues to dominate the IPL, Solanki thinks head coach Ashish Nehra has had a significant impact.
“They clearly have a great relationship, but I don’t want to minimise Siraj’s efforts; he has the backing of all the coaches, of course, and Ashish has undoubtedly had a significant impact. However, we also need to recognise and honour the effort that Siraj has done,” Solanki stated.
“It appears that we have a man who has to prove himself. He must have been disappointed, but he has dealt with it by working hard and, I imagine, giving his goals some serious thought. Ashish Nehra is an excellent instructor who is assisting him with his performance. “I hope that relationship lasts a long time and that Siraj continues to prosper,” Solanki remarked of Siraj.
This IPL season, Siraj and Nehra’s collaboration has emerged as one of the most notable alliances. Known for his composed manner and tactical awareness, Nehra has frequently been observed having lengthy conversations with Siraj during practice sessions and mid-innings breaks, providing encouragement and ideas. Results on the pitch appear to be a direct outcome of the behind-the-scenes mentoring.
It hasn’t been an easy path for Siraj. His IPL 2025 record is a statement, despite his struggles with ailments and form slumps. He was India’s preferred bowler in overseas Test matches. He is a bowler with a mission, one who wants to control the setup rather than merely be a part of it, as seen by his hunger and drive.
Siraj’s ability to score runs at the end and with the new ball is still a huge advantage as the Gujarat Titans look to qualify for the playoffs again. His increased economy rate and poise under duress have enhanced his bowling technique and made him a more well-rounded T20 bowler.
In the meantime, Shubman Gill’s leadership growth keeps up with the team’s goals. With Gill’s maturity and Siraj’s comeback serving as the cornerstones of their comeback tale, the Titans have found their groove this season, supported by a well-balanced blend of youth and experience.
The Titans are steadily gaining ground with half of the league stage left. If Siraj continues to bowl like he has, the remainder of the IPL may see more “Miyaan Magic” as Gujarat looks to make another strong run into the tournament’s final stages.
