When we think of coral reefs, the immediate picture that springs to mind is either one found on a remote island in the tropics or perhaps Lakshadweep, or Southeast Asia, or the Great Barrier Reef. Few imagine one merely a short drive away from Jamnagar, on a section of the Gujarati coast most visitors would otherwise have no reason to even look at. That’s why Narara Marine National Park, hugging a quiet arm of the Gulf of Kutch, comes as such a delightful surprise when a low tide opens up one of the few readily explorable reef flats, where one can simply amble between starfish, sea anemones and maybe even an octopus huddled in a rock pool.
What Narara Actually Is?
Narara is part of the wider Marine National Park along the Gulf of Kutch, one of the only places in India where you can get this close to a live coral ecosystem without diving gear. Twice a day, the tide pulls back far enough to expose the reef, and for a couple of hours, you can walk right out onto it. Guides usually lead small groups, pointing out things you’d otherwise walk straight past: a camouflaged pufferfish, a cluster of sea urchins, soft coral that looks more like plant life than animal.
It’s not a polished, boardwalk kind of experience. You’re wearing old shoes you don’t mind ruining, watching your footing on wet rock, and getting genuinely surprised by what’s living in three inches of water.

Getting There
Narara is near the city of Jamnagar. Jamnagar is served by an airport and has railway connectivity with all major cities in Gujarat. Once in Jamnagar, take a cab or hire a local guide who is privy to the tides and knows the time for low tide at this specific location. Otherwise, you are at your own risk, and you stand chances to miss the low tide time to see the reef exposed, and in the end end up only looking from the beach onto a flooded marine park with lots of seawater.
What to Bring and What to Expect?
Old shoes with some grip – this matters most. The terrain over the reef is very uneven, sharp, and wet all the time, and one has to walk up to 3 km, without any special path other than an uneven rocky surface. Sunscreen is advisable, since there are hardly any shadows to hide yourself from the sun, once out on the flat rocks; as is water, as you may spend more time than you anticipated, when you will notice so much there.
Stroll around slowly and carefully, watching every step as the corals are delicate and fragile creatures. Careless walking could result in irreparable damage to Coral, and in order to protect the special characteristics that one needs to visit places such as Narara (i.e. That not much care is taken with these at other renowned coral sites in the world) one should carefully be walking on top and if one is guided one should simply stick to the path advised by guides; for those who wish to wander around will end up breaking fragile Corals.
