West Indies ODI Squad for Ireland and England Tours: Jewel Andrew, Amir Jangoo Return; Hetmyer Left Out

West Indies ODI Squad for Ireland and England Tours_ Jewel Andrew, Amir Jangoo Return; Hetmyer Left Out

West Indies ODI Squad- The West Indies Cricket Board has officially announced its squad for the upcoming ODI series against Ireland and England, taking significant strides towards preparing for the 2027 ICC Cricket World Cup, scheduled to be hosted in South Africa. With Shai Hope continuing to lead the side, the selection committee has chosen to retain the core of the team that recently clinched series wins over Bangladesh and England, with the notable omission of Shimron Hetmyer.

Youthful Energy and Form Rewarded

One of the most talked-about inclusions is that of 18-year-old Jewel Andrew, who had made a positive impression in previous opportunities. The young talent is joined by Amir Jangoo, who made headlines with a sensational century on his ODI debut earlier this year. Their return signifies the board’s clear intent to invest in promising youngsters and build squad depth leading into the next World Cup cycle.

The selectors have largely shown faith in the group of players who brought success in their last outings, highlighting a desire for continuity and consistency. According to head coach Daren Sammy, these series are “critical building blocks” in the team’s roadmap to the 2027 tournament.

“These matches form a critical component of our journey towards the 2027 World Cup. We’re beginning to see the signs of a team building consistency after our sweep against Bangladesh and the hard-fought win over England late last year,” said Sammy.

“Conditions will vary significantly between Ireland and England, and that will test our adaptability. But we’re establishing a team culture that values resilience and a bold style of cricket.”

Expected Playing Core

The experienced Brandon King and the explosive Evin Lewis are expected to form the opening pair, with Keacy Carty slotting in at the pivotal No. 3 position. The middle order will see a strong combination of Shai Hope, Roston Chase, Justin Greaves, and Sherfane Rutherford, offering a blend of stability and aggressive intent.

All-rounders like Romario Shepherd and Rutherford bring depth to both the batting and bowling departments. Meanwhile, the pace attack will be led by the consistent Alzarri Joseph, supported by Shamar Joseph, Jayden Seales, and Matthew Forde—a solid mix of experience and emerging firepower.

Gudakesh Motie, who continues to be impressive in domestic cricket, remains the team’s primary spin option. He will be supported by part-time off-spinner Roston Chase in spin-friendly conditions.

Tour Schedule and Player Availability

The West Indies’ tour of Ireland kicks off on May 21, followed by two more ODIs on May 23 and May 25. After that, the team will head to England for a three-match ODI series, which runs from May 29 to June 2. The white-ball tour will then transition into a five-match T20I series, set to further test the squad’s balance and strategic execution.

While several players like Rutherford and Shepherd are currently occupied with the IPL 2025 season, their availability is expected once their respective franchises (Gujarat Titans and Royal Challengers Bengaluru) conclude their campaigns—both of which are currently in playoff contention. Shai Hope and Alzarri Joseph, playing in the PSL, are expected to join the squad promptly after the tournament’s final on May 18.

Hetmyer Dropped, Questions Raised

The absence of Shimron Hetmyer, once regarded as a future batting mainstay for the Caribbean side, has raised eyebrows. Although no official explanation was provided, it’s likely that form, fitness, or availability concerns may have influenced the selectors’ decision.

This exclusion could be a significant turning point in Hetmyer’s international career, as the West Indies look to build a team around committed performers and young talent.
