This Khatu Shyam mela is held during the month of Falgun hence the name. It is considered that it is the birthday of Baba Khatu Shyam ji on the eleventh day of the Falgun maas, therefore to celebrate this day, there is a mela organised. The people of Rajasthan call “ekadashi” as “gyaras”. This day is celebrated and considered as the most auspicious day at the Khatu Shyam Ji mandir and also during the Baba Shyam mela. It is said that the next day after gyaras, baba Khatu Shyam Ji, visitors and the devotees are served the Rajasthani delicacy “Churma Bati”.
This Khatu Shyam Ji fair is organised every year during this month. There is a very famous quote that is chanted by everyone who visits this temple. The quote or the mantra is “Hare Ka Sahara Baba Shyam Hamara”. The devotees believe that when they are in a difficult situation or going through hard times, Baba Khatu Shyam Ji is always with them and holding their hand during the trying times.
The origin of the mela
This Khatu Shyam Ji mela is said to be held at the place which is related to the Kurukshetra or the Mahabharata war and the Pandavas. It is believed that Khatu Shyam Ji is the grandson of Bhima and son of Ghatotkacha and the snake princess Mauvri. It is said that he was blessed with three arrows which made him the strongest warrior of all times. There are many stories that say or tell why Barbarik had cut his head.
However, the most believed story was that seeing his power and skills with the arrows, Shri Krishna had told him to cut his head as this would be the best for everyone along with a ritual that was followed of sacrificing the head of the greatest warrior as this will do sanctity to the battle ground and the war could began thereafter. Hence after knowing this historic presence in the Mahabharata, Khatu Shyam Ji is worshipped religiously in Rajasthan. This Khatu Shyam Ji mela is held just a few days before Holi and ends a day or two before Holi. This mela is held in the month of Phalgun.
The activities at the mela
The activities that take place during the Baba Shyam mela are chanting of mantras, bhajans and traditional performances and folk dance. There are food stalls that sell the local delicacies of the state and there are other stalls selling merchandise and souvenirs related to the place.
