The Mumbai Indians (MI) advanced to 12 points from 10 games with a resounding victory, their fifth consecutive victory of the season. MI recorded its first-ever league-stage victory over the Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) with a convincing 54-run triumph in front of 19,000 schoolchildren at Wankhede Stadium.
Both Ryan Rickelton and Suryakumar Yadav scored half-centuries, which were crucial in establishing a goal of 215. In addition, Suryakumar became the third-fastest player to reach 4,000 IPL runs. After that, LSG’s pursuit was crushed by Trent Boult’s three-for and Jasprit Bumrah’s outstanding four-wicket haul, which guaranteed MI the victory.
Mayank Yadav’s Return to LSG’s XI
As Shardul Thakur‘s replacement, Mayank Yadav made his first appearance in LSG’s starting lineup this season. His slower deliveries worked well, despite his somewhat slower speed, as he concluded with 2 for 40 from four overs. Despite strong starts from Nicholas Pooran and Mitchell Marsh, LSG’s middle order, which included an unproductive Rishabh Pant, once again struggled, and the chase collapsed as their final six wickets went for only 26 runs.
Mayank’s Early Strikes
Mayank took the new ball for LSG to start the game. He struggled to establish rhythm early on, bowling around the low-140 kph area. Mayank overpitched next, allowing Rickelton to drive the ball to the boundary after he had bounced the ball high to him in the first over.
Mayank tried the middle length of the pitch in his second over. Before Mayank replied with a change of pace, Rohit Sharma took advantage of the situation by hitting two sixes, one in front of the square and one behind. He dismissed Rohit by getting him to slice a slower ball to short third.
Rickelton and MI Off to a Flyer
MI got off to a great start thanks to Rickelton. He was not run out in the second over as Aiden Markram missed a direct hit. He then showed off his confidence on the pitch by pulling balls for boundaries and slog-sweeping. Rickelton hit Prince Yadav’s opening over with a full toss for fifteen runs. MI won the powerplay and reached 66.
Rickelton reached his 25-ball half-century by slog-sweeping Digvesh Rathi twice over midwicket, demonstrating his relentless attacking intent. Rathi changed his lengths, but he couldn’t stop the runs. Rickelton attempted to take advantage of a tossed-up googly in the ninth over, but he cut the ball straight to point for a solid 58.
SKY Takes Charge as MI Push On
Suryakumar Yadav was unfazed by Mayank’s comeback to bowling. SKY kept up the pressure by throwing Mayank over his head for a six. Will Jacks participated as well, setting a few restrictions. MI advanced further, reaching 105/2 after 10 overs, in spite of the LSG bowlers’ slower deliveries.
Jacks was bowled for 29 by Prince Yadav’s yorker, which swung backward. Suryakumar hit two sixes and a four off Bishnoi’s thirteenth over, continuing his outstanding strokeplay. But Tilak Varma was dismissed in the very next over.
With a daring ramp shot off Avesh Khan and a subsequent six off Prince, Suryakumar reached his 4000 IPL runs. In the 15th over, MI was 157/5 and ready for a spectacular finish. However, Mayank stopped the momentum with a brilliant 16th over, removing Hardik Pandya and giving up just five runs.
MI kept hitting boundaries as the finishers grabbed control, even after losing SKY for a rapid 54 off 28 balls.
The Death Overs: MI Soars Past 200
Digvesh Rathi gave up easily in the final overs, continuing his poor play. Naman Dhir and Corbin Bosch spearheaded MI’s last surge, each hitting sixes to raise the total beyond 200. MI concluded with 215 runs as a result of Rathi’s expensive failure to contain the hitters in the latter stages.
Marsh, Pooran Get LSG’s Chase Off to a Solid Start
Early on in LSG’s pursuit, Mitchell Marsh and Aiden Markram adopted an aggressive stance. Boult was cut to the boundary by Markram, and Marsh hit Deepak Chahar with a big six. LSG was 60/1 at the conclusion of the powerplay.
Jacks Strikes Again
Jacks was brought in ahead of Karn Sharma after Mitchell Santner was out due to a finger injury. After Pooran mistimed a lofted drive to long-off, where Suryakumar made an incredible grab, he struck right away and dismissed him.
LSG was left reeling as Pant, who had been promoted to No. 4, failed to create an impression and made a mistake while trying a reverse sweep. Only 13 runs were scored in the two overs that followed the powerplay.
Boult and Company Tighten the Grip
Karn was struck for two fours and a six by Ayush Badoni, who got off to an aggressive start. Marsh struggled to accelerate and slowed down on 31 off 17. LSG was reduced to 110/4 as Boult came back on the attack and grabbed Marsh with a slower ball.
Badoni (35 off 22) was unable to sustain his rapid start after falling to a slower ball from Boult, while David Miller, the replacement batsman, got off to a strong start with a quick 21 off 13.
Bumrah Masterclass Shatters LSG’s Chase
When LSG needed to score 76 runs off of 30 balls, Bumrah came back to win the match. After being caught by Bosch at deep midwicket, he first removed Miller. After bowling Abdul Samad out with a brilliant slower yorker, Bumrah hit Avesh with a yorker that knocked over his off-stump. LSG’s pursuit was virtually gone at 142/8.
The LSG camp was cheered by Ravi Bishnoi’s handful of sixes, including one off Bumrah, but it was too little, too late. MI achieved their record 150th IPL victory with a resounding 54-run victory as Bosch and Boult cleaned out the tail.
