In a dramatic turn of events, the Kerala Cricket Association (KCA) has imposed a three-year suspension on former India cricketer S Sreesanth, barring him from participating in any cricket-related activities under its purview. The decision, taken during the KCA’s general body meeting on April 30, comes in response to controversial statements made by Sreesanth regarding the non-selection of Sanju Samson for India’s Champions Trophy squad.
The cricketer’s outspoken criticism during a televised debate, and his unapologetic response to a subsequent show-cause notice from the KCA, were deemed “derogatory and inappropriate”, prompting disciplinary action from the governing body.
The Spark: Sreesanth’s Remarks on Sanju Samson
Sreesanth, known for his fiery personality on and off the field, appeared on a local Malayalam television channel where he strongly criticized the exclusion of Sanju Samson from India’s Champions Trophy squad. He insinuated that internal politics and mismanagement within the KCA could have contributed to Samson’s omission, sparking a wave of backlash from the cricketing establishment.
Sreesanth’s remarks, while resonating with some fans, were not taken lightly by the KCA, which views such public commentary as harmful to the organization’s image and credibility. A formal notice was issued to the former pacer, asking him to explain his statements.
However, his response — rather than calming the situation — intensified it. According to KCA officials, Sreesanth’s reply essentially doubled down on his initial stance, directly blaming the association for the controversy.
“His reply was not satisfactory. He essentially blamed us for Sanju’s exclusion from the Indian squad,” said Vinod Kumar, a senior KCA official. “This kind of defiant behavior cannot be tolerated.”
Others Under Scrutiny
Interestingly, Sreesanth wasn’t the only one to be issued a notice. Sanju Samson’s father, Samson Viswanath, was also sent a warning for making what the KCA called “inaccurate remarks” against the organization. However, his response was reportedly more measured than Sreesanth’s, and the association is still considering how to respond.
KCA officials also addressed allegations circulating on social media about cricketer Karun Nair being sidelined by the Kerala setup. They clarified that Karun has never played for Kerala at any level and has always been associated with Karnataka, including during his age-group cricket days.
“There have been completely baseless accusations about Karun Nair not being selected. The truth is, Karun has never represented Kerala. He’s always played for Karnataka,” Vinod added.
Sreesanth’s Role and Restrictions
Sreesanth, a co-owner of the Kollam Aeries franchise in the Kerala Cricket League, will still retain his ownership status. However, the KCA has made it clear that he cannot participate in any official cricketing activities in the state, including coaching, mentoring, or administrative roles, for the duration of the suspension.
This is not the first time the flamboyant cricketer has found himself at the center of controversy. In 2013, Sreesanth was banned for life by the BCCI following allegations of spot-fixing during the IPL. That decision was later overturned by the Supreme Court of India, allowing him to return to cricket. He eventually retired in 2022 after a brief domestic comeback.
Family Responds to the Suspension
Reacting to the news, Sreesanth’s wife, Bhuvneshwari Kumari, said the family had not received any official communication from the KCA and learned of the suspension through media reports.
“We have not received any notice or official order from the KCA. We only found out through news reports. Sree was just supporting a fellow state cricketer whom he respects deeply. Once we receive the formal notice, we will explore legal and professional options,” she said.
What This Means for Kerala Cricket
The suspension has stirred public debate in Kerala’s cricketing circles, raising questions about freedom of expression, association politics, and the treatment of former players. While some believe the KCA acted to protect its integrity, others view the move as overly punitive, especially considering Sreesanth’s stature as one of Kerala’s most successful cricketers — a member of India’s 2007 T20 World Cup and 2011 ODI World Cup winning squads.
As the dust settles, it remains to be seen whether Sreesanth will challenge the decision or let the ban run its course. For now, the fiery former fast bowler finds himself once again at odds with cricketing authorities — a familiar, if unfortunate, chapter in his eventful career.
