Plot Summary

Son of Sardaar 2 is the second instalment of the movie Son of Sardaar, which featured Ajay Devgn and Sonakshi Sinha in the lead role, and now it has Ajay Devgn and Mrunal Thakur in the lead role. It is a quirky Punjabi-flavoured comedy drama. The character played by Ajay Devgn is named Jaggi. Once again, he finds himself caught in the hilarious family feuds with mistaken identities and cross-border humour. This time, Jaggi finds himself navigating his way through love and rivalry, but also making his way out through the generational clashes in a changing India. With a Slapstick comedy, over-the-top dialogues and the colourful Punjabi setups, the sequel aims to deliver a nostalgia-driven family entertainer.

Reception

  • Critics: The critics have mixed reviews of the movie. While some have praised the film’s lightheartedness and music, many critics have found the humour to be outdated, and the screenplay was also weak compared to the original.
  • Audiences: The audiences have opened up about the movie to have decent footfalls due to Ajay Devgn’s pull, franchise value, and fan following. However, the audience’s word-of-mouth took a dip quickly after the first weekend.
  • Industry Voices: The industry experts have noted that while the film had a promising start, it could not stand strong against the strong competition from Saiyaara and Mahavatar Narsimha.

Box Office Performance

Opening Response

The film had opened with a fair number, which is INR 7.5 crore on its first day, but it also saw the collection drop sharply from Monday onwards.

Further Weeks

  • Week 3 Total: <₹1 crore
  • Lifetime India Net: ~₹45–47 crore
  • India Gross: ~₹56 crore
  • Worldwide Gross: ~₹66 crore

Highlights

  • The movie faced a still competition from movies like Narsimha and Saiyaara at the box office.
  • The occupancy level of the theatres dropped to just 10% nationwide by the second weekend.
  • The movie failed to match even the first-day earnings of the original Son of Sardaar (2012).

Budget & Recovery

  • Budget: The budget of the movie was INR 130 crore (production + marketing)
  • Worldwide Gross: However, the movie made only INR 66 crore in the whole lifetime run of the movie at the box office.
  • Recovery: The movie could only earn 35% of its return on cost. Hence, it was declared a Flop at the box office.

Music & Soundtrack

The music and soundtrack of the movie were composed by Himesh Reshammiya. His Punjabi beats and the wedding tracks have added some recall value. A few songs have found their traction on reels and festive playlists, but overall, the soundtrack could not replicate the lasting charm of the first film’s music.

Industry Impact

  • The movie was marked as one of Ajay Devgn’s weakest box office performers in recent years.
  • It also sparked discussion on the over-reliance of Bollywood on making sequels without having any fresh scripts in hand.
  • The movie’s performance at the Box office also highlighted the dominance of new content-driven and devotional films (Mahavatar Narsimha) over formula-driven comedies.

Summary

The movie Son of Sardaar 2 arrived with enthusiasm and franchise goodwill, along with star power. However, it failed to connect with the audience beyond its opening weekend. With earnings of INR 45-47 crore in India and INR 66 crore worldwide against a massive INR 130 crore budget. The film terribly underperformed at the box office, and it ended up being a flop

While the first sequel of the movie still retains the nostalgic value and feel in the audience, the second sequel of the movie is a reminder that just having a strong fan following alone can not be a guarantee of the success of the movie without having strong storytelling.
